Pioneer is a non-rotating constructed format built from cards printed in Return to Ravnica (2012) and every standard set released since. It was introduced by Wizards of the Coast in 2019 to fill the gap between rotating Standard and the much deeper Modern, giving players a large but recognizable card pool drawn entirely from the modern frame era of Magic: The Gathering.

Because Pioneer does not rotate, decks you build stay legal indefinitely, which makes it a comfortable long-term investment. The card pool is wide enough to support sophisticated strategies but excludes the oldest and most broken cards in the game, since fetch lands and many degenerate early-game enablers were deliberately left out. This keeps the format powerful yet grounded compared to Modern and Legacy.

Playstyle in Pioneer covers the full spectrum: tuned aggressive decks, combo decks that assemble a game-winning interaction, midrange piles full of value creatures and removal, and control shells that grind the game to a halt. Typical archetypes have included mono-red and mono-white aggro, various devotion and ramp strategies, graveyard and convoke combos, and powerful midrange decks. Mana bases are good but not perfect, which rewards smart deckbuilding.

Pioneer appeals to players who want a stable, high-powered format without the cost and complexity of Legacy. Many of its staples are cards people already own from recent Standard seasons, so the barrier to entry is lower than Modern. It is a strong choice for competitive players who want depth and variety, and for anyone tired of rebuilding their deck every year due to rotation.

The format's health is maintained by Wizards of the Coast through a banned list, with no rotation to rely on. Because the card pool keeps growing with every new set, Wizards periodically reviews and updates the Pioneer banlist to address dominant combos or oppressive decks. This active curation has been important in keeping the format diverse as new powerful cards are printed.

FAQ

What sets are legal in Pioneer?
Pioneer includes every standard set from Return to Ravnica (2012) onward, minus a small banned list. It does not include fetch lands or older expansions, which keeps the format from sharing Modern's most degenerate enablers.
How is Pioneer different from Modern?
Modern reaches all the way back to 8th Edition and Mirrodin (2003) and has a far larger, more powerful card pool. Pioneer starts in 2012, excludes fetch lands, and is generally a bit slower and cheaper to build.
Does Pioneer rotate?
No. Pioneer is a non-rotating eternal-style format, so any legal deck you build stays legal indefinitely unless one of its cards is added to the banned list.
