How to read MTG combo lines

2026-08-07

Combo pages list cards and steps, but executing them at the table requires reading the line like a recipe. Here is how to practice.

Anatomy of a combo page

Cards involved: the engine pieces. Prerequisites: mana, graveyard state, untapped permanents. Steps: ordered actions. Result: infinite damage, mana or cards.

Our combo pages source Commander Spellbook with added "how to execute" context — read prerequisites before assuming you can go off.

Practicing offline

Goldfish the line alone: lay out cards, walk through each step, note where opponents can interact. Common failure points: summoning sickness, not enough mana open for responses.

Ask Urza in our rules tool if a step is legal — especially with replacement effects and stack timing.

Playing combos in pods

Hold up protection or wait for a window when opponents are tapped out. Announce each step clearly in tournament play. In casual, ask if the table is okay with infinite combos before the game.

If you only need to win, demonstrate the loop twice and offer to shortcut — most groups accept.

FAQ

What is an infinite combo in MTG?
A sequence of game actions that can be repeated without limit, usually producing infinite mana, damage or card draw.
Are combos legal in Commander?
Yes unless your playgroup bans them. cEDH tables expect fast combos; casual pods may prefer slower battlecruiser games.
